Remembering Sonny Shegan

Sonny Shegan, 75, died Friday, April 26, after a 10-year battle with cancer. Sonny was instrumental in organizing the Delmarva Rodeo Association (mother association of the APRA) and was its first president. He competed in calf roping and team roping, and judged several Finals rodeos in the late 1970s and early 1980s. After retiring in 1988 from the Laurel, Maryland Police Dept. as Deputy Chief, Sonny and his wife, Mary, moved to Trout Creek, Michigan. Sonny is survived by his wife Mary, son Michael, daughter Carrie, and two grandsons. During the 1980s, Mary and Michael were selected to appear at several APRA Finals rodeos with their trick riding and Roman riding specialty acts. Michael and his wife Joanne and son Cash continue to compete in rodeos in the MidStates and IPRA associations. Contributions of remembrance can be made in Sonny’s name to Sonco Ambulance, 5480 Hwy M-28, Bruce Crossing, MI 49912, or Portage Health Home Care and Hospice, 821 W. Water St., Hancock, MI 49930.
